Riley Evans-

My name is Riley Evans. I am the President and CEO of a podcast production company called REAL Podcasting, where we help businesses and individuals break into the podcasting sphere with a professional quality program from Day One.

I've been doing work in radio and podcasting since 2013, where I co-hosted a radio show on CKCU during my time at Carleton. I got into podcasting shortly after leaving the show, and I've learned a wealth of lessons through trial and error that allow me to help creators to skip much of the podcast industry's learning curve.

I am also a PR and communications professional by education, and I frequently do communications work for my creators, as well as for other contracts. My specialties center around the use of language (both in writing and speaking/presenting) I have extensive experience in graphic design using both Adobe Photoshop and InDesign, as well as in video editing using Adobe Creative Cloud software. I currently operate using a MacBook, which is my preference, but I grew up using exclusively PCs until I started university, so I am capable on either system.

On a personal level, I was born and raised in Manotick, a small town just south of Ottawa. I grew up playing competitive rugby and terrible recreational golf, and I consider myself a fan of every sport from football to tennis. I also have a background in musical theatre, which I am an avid fan of.

Jodi Harrison-Lee-

My name is Jodi Harrison-Lee. I wrote an ebook called Find Your Strength: The secret to being safe, strong, and able to defend yourself.

My husband and I own a martial arts studio. We have been teaching for over 20 years. My kids are 21, 17, and 10. We are all involved. I was asked a few years back to do self-defense seminars specifically for young women before they go off to college. I did not really resonate with the type you see out there. So, I have spent these past few years specifically studying how I became strong (and how others have) so I could teach all young women (and indeed anyone) the same. My philosophy is great and it gets the conversation started. It focuses on the solution and NOT the problem. (I’m sick of listening to that!)

This topic is very timely. I have been afraid to really move forward with fearlessness. But the time is now.

Nick Schiffer, Owner and Creator

Nick Schiffer, Founder and owner of NS Builders with an obsession of quality craftsmanship and working with our team to build really cool projects.

I’m not sure if I remember it, or if the stories I’ve heard allow me to believe that I do. I was little, maybe two, and I was walking around the hardware store with my grandma. I kept asking her to buy me a “do-da.” After countless times asking, I finally showed her what I was talking about, and it was a screwdriver. I just wanted to play with tools. I bought small toolbox and filled it with all sorts of hard tools. I got to play with them every time I visited my grandma. When I say ‘play,’ I mean hammering nails into the wood flooring in the corner of her kitchen.

“Everyone knew I would be a carpenter or doing something with the woodworking trade.”

When I was younger, I used to make my parents drive through new housing developments to see the construction worker’s progress. I also woke up early on weekends and watched the home improvement and woodworking shows. I even stalked every contractor that showed up at our house. It got to the point that I would do my best to wear the same clothes as them…I just wanted to fit in!

Through the years, my father taught me how to use different tools and invited me to work at his business, Canton Fence Co. Immediately, I took a liking to Al Costa, an older gentleman that taught me everything he knew. When I was old enough, he let me drive his truck home if I needed a ride. He later passed away, but I will never forget the things I learned from him.

When I was 15 years old, I sold my first job. It was a 10×12 storage shed that sold to my art teacher. I called the lumber yard and gave them a material list to have delivered to my first real job site. My mother dropped me off in her Caravan with all my tools and told me that she would be back around dusk to pick me up. I sat there for four hours waiting for the truck to show up. When it did, I was so excited to sign the slip, despite the gentlemen who did not believe it was for me. For 2-weeks, I built that shed and hand nailed every piece of lumber. At the time, the only power tool I owned was a jig-saw and cordless drill.

I insisted on going to a technical high school. I enrolled at Southeastern Regional Vocation Technical High School and focused in House Carpentry. I quickly excelled in the trade. I was often head of the group, but I respected my peers and we would work as team. Later, I went off to college at Fitchburg State University. There, I received a bachelor’s degree in Construction Management. Throughout school, I always kept my tool belt behind the seat of my truck and my hands ready to work.

“I took on any project I could and wanted to make sure everyone knew I was a carpenter.”

When I graduated college, I returned to work for my father and continued doing my own projects on nights and weekends. A month later, I was contacted by a large firm to work in multifamily construction, where I would go off to be a project manager that built high-rises. I remember my first interview and had never been to the city. Since I overestimated my travel time, I showed up over an hour early. I sat down with the gentleman interviewing me and he instantly made a comment about my calloused hands. I was embarrassed and apologized, but he explained that he was tired of seeing kids my age graduate school with no sort of experience. He knew with hands like these that I wasn’t like the others.

With 11 years working for my father, 3 years working in multi-family high-rise construction and 9 years picking up my own projects, I decided it was only right to focus on what made me happy. I left the big city behind and started my business, with a focus in residential remodeling, building and custom millwork.

“I strive to provide my clients with the best quality at a fair price.”

Erik Seversen-

“Ordinary to Extraordinary” is something Erik Seversen (SEE-ver-sin) lives by, and he’s been pretty successful at it. Born into an average, lower-middle-class family in a suburb of Tacoma, Washington, Erik received no (or even negative) support from school counselors and others, but Erik didn’t let them crush his desire to accomplish amazing things. Erik also took life experiences. like rejection from his dream school UCLA, and turned them into challenges to overcome. He excelled in a community college and got into UCLA two years later.

Erik studied Anthropology (often voted the least-likely-to-succeed major), and used anthropology in business, helping a company grow from $7M to over $100,000,000 in ten years as VP of International Business Development. He also taught English as a Second Language for 10 years in Japan, France, Thailand, and universities within the USA. Erik uses entrepreneurial success formulas and motivational materials in business, but he’s also pioneering their use in the field of education. Erik has traveled to over 80 countries around the world and 49 states in the USA. He has ridden a motorcycle on six continents and crossed the USA on one twice. He also climbs mountains, having summited the highest peak of eight countries and five states.

Experiences ranging from discussing philosophy at cafés in Paris to having a machine gun stuck in his mouth in Nigeria to living with a remote Indian tribe deep in the Amazon have forged a unique perspective that Erik uses to work through both the big, life questions and small decisions we make every day. Erik is a writer, speaker, adventurer, entrepreneur, and educator who refused to let others tell him what he could and could not do. He continually worked toward his goals even when others said they were unreasonable. Erik’s travels and intersections with people from around the world weren’t just a fun romp around the planet, but they were a deep study of people, love, struggle, and ways of thinking that can be used to tackle problems in school, business, and life. His most current ambitions are sharing the lessons he’s learned through his business and climbing mountains which he says makes everyday challenges seem a lot easier.

A few things Erik picked up during his life that he likes to share:

• 7 things I learned while hitchhiking from London to Central Africa

• What living with the Wayana Indians in the Amazon taught me about leadership

• What I learned with a gun pointed at my face, and how I use that in business

• How I was tested in the clubhouse of an outlaw motorcycle club, and what I

learned from it

• Sometimes, being vulnerable is the best way to meet the greatest people

• 5 simple ways to break your routine that will add value to your life

• Why no one helps a person who complains, but they help those who don’t

• 4 simple ways to add passion and meaning to your life
